SAFETY
INNOVATIONS
We present five projects and programs — from a pool of 35 U.S. and
Canadian facilities — that improved safety at cement plants in 2012.
Portland Cement Association's Occupational Health and Safety Committee looks for examples of how the cement industry is making its plants safer places to work. The goals of the Safety Innovation Awards are:
1) To honor innovative practices, programs, and projects throughout the industry.
2) To communicate these ideas to members of the North American cement industry.
3) To raise the profile and importance of safety programs both inside and outside the industry.
MILLING AND GRINDING
BUZZI UNICEM USA, LONESTAR QUARRY AND MILL
RAW MILL LINER CART
Employees at Buzzi Unicem's Lonestar
Quarry and Mill in Cape Girardeau, Mo.,
developed a mechanism that eliminates
the need to manually handle raw mill
liners. Working with 1/4-in. wear
plates, maintenance men and their supervisor built a compact cart to transport the liners inside the roller mill. The
wheels on the cart are angled to follow
the contours of the inner bowl in the
mill. A small electric hoist is used to
lower the cart into the bowl area where
the hoist is positioned to receive the
mill liners, and a washer is welded to
the liner so it can be lowered by the
hoist onto the cart.
