The new hybrid technology makes it easier and less expensive to capture and purify CO2 produced by the industry. Normally, flue gases emitted from a cement plant contain about 20 percent CO2. In order to transport and/or store the CO2 from these gases, they must first be scrubbed. The current minimum requirement is approximately 95 percent purity. However, the process is energy-demanding as it requires large amounts of heat. "We propose a promising approach using a membrane fil- ter combined with an in-house developed system involving forced concentration of the CO2 by liquefaction," explained SINTEF researcher David Berstad. "We achieve this by cool- ing it down under pressure." Unlike conventional CO2 capture methods, the new process uses electrical energy to cool and compress the gas instead of using steam to regenerate solvents. The membrane alone concentrates the CO2 gases to approximately 70 per- cent purity. It is currently standard to employ an additional membrane step to scrub the gas and achieve the necessary purity of 95 percent. However, the research team's method involving CO2 liquefaction is less energy demanding, and also results in an even purer gas, noted SINTEF officials. Measurements made by Berstad and his research colleague Stian Trædal during experiments with the new system car- ried out on a laboratory rig in Trondheim, Norway, showed impressive levels of purity. "The best results that we have seen are about 99.8 percent, but it is theoretically possible to achieve even higher levels of purity," said Berstad. SINTEF Hybrid Technology Makes It Easier to Capture CO2 According to the just-released 2019 edition of the U.S. Geo- logical Survey's Mineral Commodity Reports, production of portland cement in 2018 in the United States increased slightly to about 85.4 million tons, and output of mason- ry cement continued to be stagnant at 2.4 million tons. Cement was produced at 98 plants in 34 States, and at two plants in Puerto Rico. Overall U.S. cement production continued to be well below the record level of 99 million tons reported in 2005, indicating continued full-time idle status at a few plants, underutilized capacity at many oth- ers, production disruptions from plant upgrades, plant clo- sures over the interim, and relatively inexpensive imports in some recent years. Sales of cement increased by nearly 3 percent in 2018. Over- all, shipments were 27.8 million tons lower than the record volume set in 2005. The overall value of shipments was near- ly $12.7 billion. Most of the sales of cement were to make concrete, worth at least $66 billion. In recent years, about 70-75 percent of cement sales have been to ready-mixed concrete producers, 8-10 percent to contractors (mainly road paving; much contractor work also involves ready-mixed con- crete), about 10 percent to concrete product manufacturers, and 7-10 percent to other customer types.
