CEMENT AMERICAS • Winter 2015 • www.cementamericas.com 24 PRODUCTS Mondi Launches Rain Resistant Splash Bag In response to customer interest in rain-repellent paper bags, Mondi has developed the Splash Bag that resists rain for up to two hours and withstands humidity better than a standard paper bag, noted the manufacturer. Standard paper bags for pack- aging cement and other pow- dery products are generally vulnerable to rain. To tackle the issue, Mondi, working in collab- oration with Lafarge, developed an innovative rain-repellent bag particularly suitable for cement. The new wet-strength- ened, machine-finished Splash Bag is designed to absorb less moisture than conventional bags. Its outer ply of Mondi Ad- vantage Protect sack kraft paper has a water-repellent sur- face and is formulated to keep high tensile strength even in a wet environment. It also helps prevent moisture ingress if conditions are damp or humid during storage. Splash Bag's water-resistive properties are apparent in side-by- side visual testing versus standard paper cement bags (test con- ditions simulating direct exposure to rain). "Water gathers on the bag's surface without being absorbed, then evaporates over a period of several minutes, leaving the bag essentially dry," ex- plained Claudio Fedalto, deputy COO Mondi Industrial Bags. "By contrast, the standard bag absorbs the water, weakens as a re- sult and may potentially rupture if exposed to extremely wet con- ditions." Results of Cobb tests, which measure the amount of water absorbed into the surface by sized paper over a set period of time, indicate that Splash Bags are resistant to rain for nearly two hours. If inadvertently left in damp conditions. Splash Bag re- sists moisture ingress for up to 12 hours. Even after two hours of direct exposure to rain, Splash Bags can be moved, handled and emptied without any difficulties. Bag breakage rates are significantly reduced, leading to genuine cost savings: fewer broken bags translate to lower vehicle and site clean-up costs, fewer trips from warehouse to site, as well as time savings for logistics and site managers. Excellent mois- ture resistance can also mean better protection of the filling good if conditions are damp or humid at the warehouse. Importantly, none of these advantages comes at the expense of filling speeds or de-aeration rates, which match those of standard bags (in tests performed on Mega Gurley equipment at Mondi's Bag Application Centre in Austria). Mondi Industrial Bags, www.mondigroup.com Tri-Mer Offers Advanced Multi-Pollutant Filters Tri-Mer's UltraCat Catalyst filters remove particulate (PM), acid gases such as SO2 and HCl, and NOx in a single all-in- one system. The filters are composed of fibrous ceramic ma- terials that can withstand high temperatures up to 1650˚ F. The filter walls have nanobits of highly-efficient SCR catalyst for NOx control. Destruction of NOx is effective at tempera- tures as low as 350˚ F. Acid gases are removed in the same system with integrated dry sorbent injection of sodium bi- carbonate, trona or lime. Dioxins are also destroyed by the proprietary catalyst. Tri-Mer ceramic filter systems provide much higher tempera- ture capabilities than fabric filter baghouses, with much better performance, yet are still cost competitive with ESP, noted the manufacturer. In addition, Tri-Mer filters have unique multi-pol- lutant features including NOx and dioxin treatment not possible with fabric filters or ESP. UltraCat filters typically capture particulate to levels less than 0.001 grains/dscf (2.0 mg/ Nm3). MACT compliance levels are guaranteed. The unique structure of the filters keeps the col- lected particles on the surface. The embedded NOx catalyst is protected from blinding and poisoning.
