Cemex to Increase Production at Costa Rica Plant Cemex, S.A.B. de C.V. announced that its subsidiary Cemex Latam Holdings, S.A. (CLH) will start an investment project to increase cement production capacity in its plant located in Col- orado, Costa Rica, by approximately 25 percent, reaching an annual capac- ity of 1.1 million tpy by 2017. The total investment is expected to be approximately $35 million in a three- year period and will include the con- struction of a new grinding mill, as well as several capacity enhancing projects on its clinker production line. "With this increased capacity we will strengthen our position in Costa Rica, reit- erating our commitment to support the de- velopment of the country. We are confident that infrastructure projects will continue driving demand for building ma- terials over the medium-term, said Alejan- dro Ramirez, director of CLH in Costa Rica. Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica Alexander Mora said that the Cemex Costa Rica investment is a sign of the group's com- mitment with the country and also an ex- ample of the good performance that foreign companies may experience in Costa Rica. The Cemex Costa Rica investment project was presented by company rep- resentatives during a bilateral meeting with Costa Rica President Luis Guillermo Solís, Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica Alexander Mora, and General Director of CINDE Jorge Sequeira during a promotional visit to attract investment, made in Mexico City on December 10. Additionally, the expansion is expected to generate approximately 90 jobs dur- ing the construction phase and about 50 jobs once operations begin. Union Andina de Cementos Acquires Lafarge Ecuador Peruvian cement manufacturer Union Andina de Cementos (UNACEM) has completed the purchase of Lafarge Ce- mentos Ecuador, reported local media outlets. The purchase, which was first announced in May 2014, was for around $517 million. UNACEM bought 98.57 percent of Lafarge Cementos Ecuador via its public stock offering. "We are pleased with the transaction, which represents an important step in our growth strategy. With this long-term investment in our neighboring country, Ecuador, we are committed to the Ecuadorian market, to serve it in the best way and to continue with the company's contribution to the citizens' quality of life," said Carlos Ugás, UNACEM director. "The prestige of the UNACEM group in the cement industry makes this invest- ment an attractive challenge for our company's employees, who have re- ceived a clear message of continuity. In that regard, we are excited about the new era ahead," added José Antonio Correa, chief executive officer, Lafarge Cementos Ecuador. With the acquisition, UNACEM will have an installed cement production capacity of 9.7 million tpy. Lehigh Cement Plants Earn Energy Star Certification Lehigh Hanson Inc. announced that four of its Lehigh Cement plants have earned the U.S. Environmental Protec- tion Agency's Energy Star certification for 2014. The company's cement man- ufacturing plants in Leeds, Ala.; Union Bridge, Md.; Glens Falls, N.Y.; and Red- ding, Calif., all perform within the top 25 percent of cement plants nation- wide for energy efficiency and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.
