NEWS GEBR. PFEIFFER HELPS MONARCH CEMENT PLANT REDUCE EMISSIONS Today's plant upgrades are not always driven by a need to increase capacity, but rather a need to reduce emissions in order to meet new government standards. This was the case with the Monarch Cement Co of Humboldt, Kan., whose cement plant needed to improve the overall airflow in order to meet the new NESHAP (National Emis- sion Standards for Hazardous Air Pol- lutants) requirements. As a result, Monarch Cement recently contracted with Gebr. Pfeiffer, Inc. to up- grade its MPS 3450 Raw Mill, provided by Allis Chalmers under MPS license. The 3,450-mtph mill upgrade solution will include new grinding table for the MPS 3450 Raw Mill; SLS 3750 high-effi- ciency classifier; AZZ 5600 cyclone; fan; and plant engineering. Additional duct work and related engineering services also will be provided, along with instal- lation of a new Gebr. Pfeiffer "lift and swing" device that will simplify, and offer easier access, for the mill mainte- nance process. The upgrade project will allow hot gases from two kilns to be both directed through the raw material mill, which will clean the gas tants AMERICAS pollu- while grinding lime- stone in the MPS 3450 raw mill, thus improving the overall airflow at the plant. Completion of the upgrade is ex- pected by March 2013 and will result in an overall reduction in emissions. LAFARGE GROUP REORGANIZES MANAGEMENT Executive Committee, including the creation of a Performance function and an Innovation function. The Executive Committee will be comprised of an Executive Vice President (EVP) Innovation (Gérard Kuperfarb); an EVP Performance (Guillaume Roux); three EVPs Op- erations (Jean-Carlos Angulo, measures: Implementing a country- based organization, with country CEOs' responsibilities extended to cover all cement, aggregates and concrete activities, using common support functions; the removal of one hierarchical layer, with the aim of cutting out the regional level; and the resulting transformation of the structure and responsibilities of the Thomas Farrell, Christian Herrault) responsible for supervising coun- trie; an EVP Strategy, Development and Public Affairs (Jean Desazars de Montgailhard); an EVP Finance (Jean-Jacques Gauthier); an EVP Organization & Human Resources (Eric Olsen); and one Senior Vice President Group Communications (Alexandra Rocca). This project is the natural next step following Lafarge's geographi- cal expansion and its recent refo- cusing on cement, aggregates and www.cementamericas.com • November/December 2011 • CEMENT AMERICAS STRUCTURE BY COUNTRY RATHER THAN PRODUCT LINE With a new focus meant to make the company more agile and responsive, Paris-based Lafarge Group leadership has decided to focus on its markets and its clients, hopefully resulting in accelerating the group's development and profitability. The product line- based organization will be replaced with a country-based organization— thus removing a layer of manage- ment—and the reorganization of the company's Executive Committee. The project involves three main concrete, particularly after the dis- posal of most of its gypsum activi- ties. Its aim is to increase Lafarge's differentiation through the develop- ment of higher value-added prod- ucts and solutions for construction. "This new organization project will reinforce our efficiency, drive us to greater focus on our markets and customers' needs, and accelerate the Group's development through organic growth and i nnovation," said Bruno Lafont, chairman and chief executive officer of Lafarge. "This transformation is a milestone for the group. It should strengthen La- farge's position as a key player in sustainable construction." The Lafarge organization project will be implemented from January 2012, once the necessary informa- tion and consultation procedures have taken place. 7
