BRIEFS ACTIVITIES & APPOINTMENTS Annual NRMCA Committee, Chairman's Awards The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association honored producer and associate members during its 2012 convention last month in Savannah, Ga. Awards were presented to individuals or companies as determined by various NRMCA committees, along with 2011–12 Chairman Karl Watson, Jr. WILLIAM B. ALLEN AWARD H. Tom Becken, chairman of Cemstone in Mendota Heights, Minn., is the 2012 recipient of an award named for one of the industry's most distinguished management consultants and plant-management veterans. Accepting the award on his behalf was son Tim Becken, Cemstone vice president. CHAIRMAN'S AWARD Recipients Thomas L. Flynn (top) and Ken- neth G. Robinson (bottom) were recognized for extraordinary dedication to the associa- tion and ready mixed industry. A past (2000) NRMCA chairman and longtime board member, Flynn recently retired as CEO and CFO of the former Flynn Group, an Iowa- based ready mixed and aggregate producer. Robinson is executive chairman of Com- mand Alkon Inc., the Birmingham, Ala.- based business he has built since founding Command Data in 1976 and bolting on such brands as ACS and PSI. A Command Data and Alkon Corp. merger in 2000, fol- lowed by a series of deals involving domes- tic and overseas information technology specialists, has positioned the company as one of the largest global software and hardware providers for construction mate- rials producers. CONCRETE CARES Drake Materials of Scottsdale, Ariz., was rec- ognized for its outstanding commitment to community service. In partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Miracle League of Arizona and a host of other charitable and business leaders in the community, Drake Materials has helped give special needs children an all-American experi- ence—playing baseball. Fifty Drake employees worked to support the project's construction manager, Hunt Construction Group, by dedicating more than 120 hours to help build the Dan Haren Mir- acle League Field, which is wheelchair and walker friendly. In ad- dition, Drake supplied the complex with almost 300 yd. of colored and regular concrete. On hand to accept the Concrete Cares Award was Drake Materials President Daryl Leazier. 16 | APRIL 2012 DRIVERS OF THE YEAR NRMCA awards breakfast attendees' enthusiasm peaked with the Op- erations, Environmental and Safety Committee's recognition of mixer drivers. Driver of the Year Timothy J. Lindsay of GCC Mid-Continent Concrete's Siloam Springs, Ark., plant (right) and Raymond Spradley of Titan America's Port Norfolk, Va., plant received recognition at the event. PROMOTER OF THE YEAR Larry Gibbes, Argos USA, was named the 2012 Promoter of the Year for outstanding contri- butions in support of concrete promotion, with a particular focus on product perform- ance in recent years. Promotion successes have included the placement of more than 35,000 yd. of concrete from recent activities. LIFETIME FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN PROMOTION Peter Deem, who recently retired from Holcim Ltd. as vice president of sales for the West, received the Lifetime Achievement for Promo- tion Award in recognition of his long career at the company. Deem has distinguished him- self in his resolve that industry associations must work together to maximize gains for all segments. He demonstrated time and again his ability to bring about such collaboration through his patient but persistent and personally genuine efforts. STATE ASSOCIATION The Kentucky Ready-Mixed Concrete Associ- ation was honored with the 2011 State As- sociation of the Year, recognizing contributions to the industry in the areas of research, education, advocacy and promo- tion.
