SAFETY INNOVATIONS GENERAL FACILITY GCC RIO GRANDE, TIJERAS PLANT MILL WORK MOTOR PLATFORM Working on "clean and inspect" preventive maintenance of the motor coil windings and shaft babit bearings in the ball mill motors led employees at the GCC Rio Grande plant in Tijeras, N.M., to create a work platform that would prohibit employees from falling. The maintenance work requires employees to work outside the regular guard rail when servicing the outboard side of the motor. Employees removed the fall hazard altogether by installing a removable work platform just outside the guard. The PVC non-skid grating is light enough to allow sections to be lifted out and reinstalled as needed when PM work is scheduled. GENERAL FACILITY NATIONAL CEMENT CO., RAGLAND PLANT TAKE-UP REEL CABLE GUIDE Employees at the National Cement Co.'s plant in Ragland, Ala., designed a cable guide device that prevents cable damage when gathering cable onto a reel. Almost every time the 440 VAC power supply cable for a moving, rail-mounted tripper car had to be taken up, the cable was damaged. Employees constructed a sturdy, narrow Ushaped guide device and attached it to a gear motor, then installed the cable guide on the tripper car cable reel. www.cementamericas.com • Spring 2013 • CEMENT AMERICAS 35
